Congratulations to the Cochran’s at 1421 Cambridge Ln. for winning Keep Denton Beautiful’s July Yard of the Month award in the Lawn category. This yard is proof that you can have a manicured lawn, garden beds brimming with plants, and a variety of trees too!
The Cochran’s yard has plush St. Augustine grass, a very tolerant, warm-season turfgrass (TAMU), and is an excellent option for those who have trees in their yard. Emily, a Yard of the Month judge and Master Gardener, admired the various materials and textures in this yard and especially the thoughtful conversion of grass to garden, bringing many benefits.
Hear directly from Sherry Cochran in this month’s Yard of the Month video and check out the grass and garden beds in the gallery below.

Transform Grass to Garden!
Incorporating garden beds with native plants adds character to your yard by diversifying texture, color, and shape while reducing the amount of water and chemical fertilizers needed to maintain the yard. A variety of plants create beneficial wildlife habitat areas if replacing with plants that provide food or nesting sources. Garden beds can even help with stormwater runoff when appropriately planned.
