Oct. 27 marked Keep Denton Beautiful, Inc. (KDB)’s 20th Annual Community Tree Giveaway! 700 Dentonites received free trees from KDB at the drive-thru style event in just five hours. This year, seven species were given away: Bald Cypress, Brandywine Maple, Burr Oak, Chinkapin Oak, Lacebark Elm, Mexican Plum, and Shumard Oak. Take a look at the gorgeous event photos taken by local photographers, Gabriel Lee and Trejon D’Angelo.

Redbud Wrap-up! Photos from the 2016 Redbud Festival

On Saturday, April 23, Denton celebrated Arbor Day at the 23rd Annual Denton Redbud Festival!

We kicked off the festivities with a ceremonial tree-planting; Mayor Chris Watts, Councilmember Joey Hawkins and his kids, Councilmember Keely Briggs, and Urban Forester Haywood Morgan planted a Live Oak in Quakertown Park.

A total of 125 3-gallon sized red oak trees were given out to Dentonites who took a 30-minute tree care class (lead by Certified Arborist, Scott Geer of Tree Shepherds, with support from City of Denton Urban Forester, Haywood Morgan), and hundreds of Redbud seedlings were given out free to festival goers!

Families with young children enjoyed a Denton Public Library tree-themed storytime at the Redbud Festival, where the first 50 participants received a free copy of the book, The Happiness Tree!

The tree planting, tree giveaway, and free children’s books at this year’s Redbud Festival were made possible through the Denton Tree Initiative, a citywide partnership between KDB and the City of Denton to plant 12,000 trees by 2019.

In addition to the Arbor Day Festivities, dozens of vendor booths with plant sales, home improvement products, local, handmade crafts, and special activities filled the Civic Center and Quakertown Park. Festival-goers enjoyed a Redbud classic – a live TRASHion Runway Show at noon – along with educational workshops and live music performances by A.M. Ramblers, Tony Ferraro, and Kim Nall & the Fringe throughout the day. A Kids Zone with bounce houses, face painting, and a Turtle Discovery exhibit were a draw for young attendees.

The Denton Redbud Festival is one of our favorite events every year! It has such a wonderful, curated, community feel. Thank you so much to all of our amazing volunteers, sponsors, and supporters for making this festival possible!

Tree Giveaway Pre-Event Workday 2015

IMG_0145 edited small

Today was the Pre-Event Workday that we have every year in preparation for the Community Tree Giveaway. With the help of some awesome volunteers, we tag each individual tree with a personalized identification tag and sort all of the trees by species and participant last name. This year, we have approximately 700 trees to sort and tag. Can you imagine how long that would take KDB’s tiny staff of three people? The Pre-Event Workday may not be as glamorous (ha!) as other KDB volunteer events, but it’s such a great example of how important our volunteers are! We couldn’t do what we do without the help of our amazing volunteers!
